Second Annual Conference Plans

We would like to invite anyone involved with the care of people with hearing loss to attendee the Second Conference of the Coalition for Global Hearing Loss in Los Angeles, California on Sept 8 – 9, 2011 at the House Ear Institute. Our first conference, held in Washington D.C. in June of 2010 was a great success with over 75 participants from all over the world representing all aspects of hearing healthcare professionals, deaf educators and patient advocates. After the 2010 conference we conducted a survey of the participants to define the areas were the coalition can have the most impact. The upcoming 2011 Coalition for Global Hearing Health Conference is intended to focus on these areas.

The meeting will begin on Thursday, Sept 8 <click for preliminary schedule>  in the afternoon with small workgroup discussion of each of these issues and drafting specific action items that we can work on together.  These topics include: advocacy for better hearing healthcare, technical challenges and opportunities, increasing the workforce through quality training, empowering families and affected individuals, and establishing best practices and standards of care. The first day will end with reports from existing programs, a cocktail reception and the keynote address.

On the second day, we will here from experts in each of the areas of interest. The talks for this plenary session will be selected submissions from CGHH members and invited guests. Each plenary session will end with a discussion and a refinement of the action items drafted by the workgroups on these areas of interest / need. We end the day with a final list of action items for the coalition and a plan to implement these tasks.

The dates of this conference immediately precede the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in San Francisco, California so that international attendees could attend both meetings easily if they wish. The cost of the Coalition for Global Hearing Health Conference is yet undetermined, but every effort will be made to make it affordable to participants form developing countries. As always, requests for registration waivers will be accepted.
